Shifty Records - What You Won't Hear on the Radio virtual exhibition

As part of the Shifty Records Legacy Archive project SAHA has developed the Shifty Records - What You Won't Hear on the Radio virtual exhibition. This exhibition is based on the physical exhibition which opened on 1 September and is on display at Alliance Française in Johannesburg for the remainder of the month.

The virtual exhibition tells the Shifty story, as well as exploring themes such as the role of music in the End Conscription Campaign, music censorship, the Voëlvry legacy and the life and music of James Phillips.

Both exhibitions draw on historical artefacts from the archives to explore the various ways in which Shifty Records created a musical outlet for South Africans to challenge apartheid through musical activism.
