EXHIBITION: Entering Tembisa

The road to Tembisa, 1984 - photograph by Gille de Vlieg

To celebrate Heritage Day 2011, you are invited to attend the launch of the exhibition ‘Entering Tembisa: an oral and photographic exploration', and to participate in a panel discussion exploring the history of the community.

This exhibition is part of an oral history and archival collection project on Tembisa, conducted by the South African History Archive (SAHA) in 2010 and 2011. It brings together a diverse range of life stories of community members with rich historical images and artefacts from the archives to create an evocative telling of the previously neglected history in Tembisa.

Community members are encouraged to add their voices to this collection by having their life stories recorded by oral historians and transcribed for preservation in the archive.

The project team will also be scanning and photographing historical documents of life in Tembisa on the day. Please bring your photographs, letters, reports, pamphlets, stickers, T-shirts, banners and any other items that tell the story of Tembisa's past, so that copies of these can be added to the book and digital archive that will be lodged with schools and libraries across Tembisa.

Date: 24 September 2011
Time: 9:30 am - 12:30pm
Venue: Tembisa West Library - Community Hall, Corner Himalaya Street / Bophelong Street, Umnonjaneni, Tembisa

Please RSVP by Friday 16 September 2011 by emailing melissa@saha.org.za or calling the SAHA offices on 011 7171941.
