Friends of the Archive Seminar

Recently the National Archives and Records Service of South Africa held a two day seminar in Pretoria under the theme, "Narrating History through Photographs: Echoes and Possibilities of Archival Photographic Collections" from 8-9 March 2018. The seminar focused on creating awareness on the role of archives in the preservation and management of South Africa's photographic collections. The seminar was aimed at gathering archivists, historians and researchers interested in documenting, preserving and narrating South African stories in a range of mediums. SAHA's director, Geraldine Frieslaar was invited to make a contribution to the seminar and her presentation focused on some of the photographs from the Gille de Vlieg photographic collection and the SAHA poster collection. Through her contribution, Frieslaar focused on visual culture as a primary means for communicating calls for social justice and building solidarity. Through graffiti, murals, digital art, photography, posters and other creative forms, activists can reach others.
