Self-taught poet Mi Hlatshwayo composted "A Black Mamba Rises" in response to a strike at Dunlop Sports (Durban) in 1984. He worked there at the time, and the poem praises the Dunlop workers' struggle. He was a member of the Durban Workers' Cultural Local.
