The provenance of the lever-arch folder marked 'The Fort (complete)' is not known, but much of the materials relate to the development of the Fort and site in the early 1990s, prior to the Constitutional Hill Development Project a decade later. Included in this folder are: Minutes of meetings of the Fort Steering Committee for 1994; background documents on the history of the Fort; correspondence from Flo Bird of the National Monuments Council to Raymond Cardosa, Deputy Director: City Architect regarding the development of the Fort property and a visit to the Fort site, cost estimates; articles and reports: The Fort: potential for a tourist centre; Alan Lipman Architects report on the possible uses of the site and buildings - primarily for residential, community/education and tourist purposes; The restoration of the Johannesburg Fort - a living museum of military and penal history; site maps, and an article on Bob Gosani. Reference material include: Report of the Commission appointed to enquire into the Johannesburg Prison, 1904-1905; people's experiences at the Fort as a prison, such as Nelson Mandela, Joe Slovo, Ellen Kuzwayo, Treason trialists and newspaper articles. |
