In 2010, three former senior diplomats from the South African Department of Foreign Affairs published a three-book publication providing first hand stories from South African diplomats who worked from 1960 to 1999, titled ‘From Verwoerd to Mandela: South African Diplomates Remember’.
As part of this process, the editors interviewed a wide range of diplomats. These extensive interviews, along with some of their correspondence was given to the University of Stellenbosch archive.
This ‘background material’ was consulted and recorded by Open Secrets, and then analysed in terms of any material that spoke to covert trade and sanctions busting during the 1970s and 1980s. All the material gathered and the Open Secrets summary is provided in this archive.
